About the Artist
Steve Lyons is an artist and gallerist based out of Chatham, MA. His work is fast becoming some of the most recognized art in the USA and Europe, and is highly noted for creating what is internationally known as "sculptural paintings". This breakthrough technique utilizes heavy impasto to create heightened dimensionality on the canvas, and has captured the attention of critics, collectors, artists and the general public across the globe.
In 2016 Lyons was named one of the Top 5 Expressionist Artists in the World by the American Art Awards and in 2017 the American Art Awards named Lyons second in the World for abstract expressionism. Steve Lyons was the first American to win the shared exhibition prize at the Stadtgalerie, Westerland, Germany. In 2014, he was the first American awarded private mentorship with Finland’s premier living artist and designer, Markku Piri. In March 2015, Lyons made international news when he was the victim of an art heist totaling $100,000. His art was eventually recovered and was recently on display at an art exhibition in Berlin.
He has exhibited all over the world including Freising (Munich), Berlin, La Paz (Mexico), and Poznan (Poland). His work has also been exhibited in New Haven and Old Greenwich, CT, Boston, MA, and Cincinnati, OH, and is held in collections by individuals and institutions. Lyons was born and raised in Portsmouth, Ohio, located on the northern banks of the Ohio River.
He began painting as a child and by age eight had won his first competition in Canton, Ohio. He earned a B.A. at Eastern Kentucky University, and an M.A. at Louisiana State University—where he majored in journalism, minored in art, and was a Walter Hitesman Scholarship recipient. Lyons lived in New York City for eight years before calling New England home. His primary residency is in Chatham, MA, but he travels extensively to Europe. You can see Steve's work at his working Gallery in Chatham, MA and at the Quidley Gallery in Naples, FL.
